It was just a word, a silly nickname from the first night they’d met at a party, stumbling back to Vi’s apartment to drink shitty rose her sibling had left behind, Cait’s legs thrown over Vi’s lap like they’d known each other for years and years. But Vi had forgotten her name, refused to admit it, called her cupcake for her sweetness, then checked her wallet when Cait had fallen asleep on Vi’s couch like she was a drunk freshman instead of a 25-year-old who had just finished her comp exams. It was just a word, but it broke the last shred of resistance in her. They would figure this out. They could make this work a second time. But Cait didn’t say any of that, just reached her hand across the couch until it touched Vi’s leg. “Say it again.” “What, cupcake?” “Yeah.” Vi smiled at her, amused, and covered her hand with one of her own, completely enveloping it. “Hey, cupcake.”
