A loud bang could be heard from inside the cabin. If it wasn’t for a steady hand on his shoulder from Mr. Oaks, Isaac would’ve been halfway down the trail and back to the wagon already. The boy’s eyes were stuck to that old cabin as if he was being drawn closer. With a sudden pull from the old man, Isaac was brought closer but no words were exchanged. That’s when Isaac noticed Mr. Oaks hand, which was gripping his shirt tightly, shaking violently. Another bang filled the air but a lot louder than before. A quick jerk of the shirt again and one more step closer. A third bang, some scratching noises, and a sudden scream the likes of which Isaac had never heard before radiated from the cabin. “I-I thought it was dead. L-Lordy help us,” were the only words Mr. Oaks could mutter. Isaac started to feel light headed. Before he knew it everything around him began to spin in a blurry mix like stirring up a glass jar of water and recently caught frogs. Faster and faster he spun until he no longer saw Mr. Oaks nor the trees and sky just the cabin. Only this time, it raged and roared like some wild beast was trapped inside.
There is a deep history behind Overseers, Slave Catchers, and even the specific breeds of hunting dogs that I never knew existed back in the 1800's. Much of which was a part of the daily life and culture which shaped the many communities and everyday interactions. Through research I've expanded my view to a wider picture of this time period that no Hollywood movie can capture. I hope to bring these characters to life and capture what it really meant to live in such trying historic times.
Issac was downright mesmerized. The lumber mill, the weeping willows, and all the colorful stores in town gave him all the adventure he could handle. “Now your mama told you to mind me. So when we get there no beggin for candy now,” said Mr. Oaks with the sternest of expressions. “Yes’em,” Issac replied with a disappointed shy. Mr. Oaks’ expression slowly changed to a grin as he handed the boy one of the horse’s reigns. “Well c’mo now these horses ain’t go hold themselves and we got ah long way to go,” he said bringing a bright smile back to Issac’s face excited again. They took the wagon bumping down the rocky road.
