campaign email from the Sheriff: This is Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I wanted to send a personal message to you and also invite you to a gathering tomorrow. I just got out of an interview with Fox 9's Amy Hockert discussing our role in keeping the peace during a painful, out-of-control time in Hennepin County. The current surge of federal agents, and some of their behavior specifically, has affected our community deeply. In law enforcement, we all pay the price when one of our own oversteps the line. I have seen videos and received firsthand accounts of that happening over and over again in the last month. It has to stop. At the same time, our deputies have taken a great deal of abuse for simply doing their jobs, keeping the peace, patrolling the areas that we are required by law to patrol, and attempting to minimize the violence in our streets. The small number of demonstrators who use violence undermine the cause of the thousands of peaceful demonstrators around them. It is not an easy time to be in public service. It is not an easy time to live in Hennepin County. But we will make it through. I am running for re-election to keep Hennepin County safe, to protect residents from those who wish to do harm, and to ensure our justice system treats everyone fairly.
