Who remembers web-safe colors? In the early web days, there were only 216 colors blessed as "web-safe" -- you could expect them to look correct on all displays. It was extremely limiting for design! If you've ever noticed the "Only Web Colors" checkbox in Photoshop, it's a holdover from this.

I cut my teeth doing HTML on notepad in 98, using 800x600 displays. I still remember my hex colors and they came in handy when I took an image processing course during my MSc in Bioinformatics earlier this year. also used border detection / masking / segmentation / etc to get cells from TIFF images
