Ce mercredi 29 juillet, la rédaction de Marianne a appris la prochaine nomination de Jean Quatremer au poste d’éditorialiste. Ses écrits occuperaient une place de choix en ouverture du magazine, en remplacement du texte jusque-là signé par Natacha Polony. Cette décision marquerait un tournant dans l’identité éditoriale du titre, de nature à tordre notre ADN et à brusquer nos lecteurs. Alors que notre magazine a toujours protesté contre l’accaparement du débat public par un « cercle de la raison », Jean Quatremer s’est illustré par sa morgue envers les simples citoyens qui oseraient y intervenir. En témoignent ses multiples propos insultants contre les participants au mouvement des gilets jaunes : ce « mouvement de beaufs », cette « France moisie » de « factieux » à « embastiller », écrivait-il alors sur Twitter. De son côté, Marianne avait couvert ce mouvement sans condescendance, en lui consacrant une couverture intitulée « Nous sommes le peuple ». Plus récemment, Jean Quatremer a multiplié les invectives contre les militants de la cause palestinienne, qu’il a assimilés au nazisme dans une image publiée sur les réseaux sociaux. Notre rédaction ne s’oppose pas à ce que son courant de pensée s’exprime dans nos colonnes : au contraire, la pluralité des voix a toujours fait notre force. Mais ce nouvel éditorial lui donnerait une place démesurée, au regard de la vocation historique de Marianne et des attentes de nos lecteurs. Notre journal ferait ainsi un grand pas vers la tonalité médiatique dominante, alors qu’il a plus que jamais besoin de cultiver sa singularité. Nous peinons à comprendre cette orientation, alors que Denis Olivennes a assuré à plusieurs reprises ne pas vouloir nous transformer en « Franc-tireur bis ». At the book club, the group read political zines on subjects like “a journal of materialist feminism” and “a call for the eradication of artificial intelligence from the face of the earth” – perhaps niche, but nothing illegal, an FBI agent testified in court. Still, the FBI seized these zines, along with the printing press and a collection of poetry about losing a sibling to cancer.

I know Wayland has some advantages over X, but in my opinion they really blew it by keeping it so minimal. Granted, the Wayland protocol could have remained a simple core for a proper, feature-rich and modern library that allows the simple implementation of compositors, but what we have now seemingly stems from the fear of the Wayland developers to define anything. Instead, what we got was a multitude of proprietary (in terms of specific to popular compositors) extensions, requiring thousands of LOCs of boilerplate to get it all right. To name a particular aspect, color management, Wayland could have been the chance for the Linux desktop to finally be on par with the exquisite color management (to the core!) that macOS offers. Instead, it's just yet another set of extensions that barely works consistently.

Dans notre veille, nous avons constaté que le terme « parawing » n’était pas protégé. Surprenant au regard de son usage qui commence à être répandu. Nous sommes très régulièrement victimes de profiteurs qui déposent après coup un terme de ce type et tentent de nous soutirer de l’argent. Bien entendu ces demandes n’aboutissent pas puisque le droit nous protège. Mais c’est agaçant et une perte de temps considérable. Je n’utilise pas ce terme de « parawing » car à mon sens il n’est pas le plus adapté. Mais pour éviter d’avoir un jour quelqu’un qui toque à ma porte pour réclamer des fortunes suite à l’utilisation de ce mot, je l’ai protégé car oui nous avons les moyens de le faire. Mon avis est qu’au delà des moyens, nous avons le devoir de protéger nos passions. Et ce sont aux « grands » acteurs de le faire. C’est de notre responsabilité. Le fond de cette histoire est que pour moi c’est BRM qui devrait posséder ce terme. Ils sont à l’initiative de la promotion de ce sport. Mais ils sont libres de faire comme ils veulent. Pour ma part, je ne souhaite pas l’utiliser. Je veux juste que personne ne vienne nous agacer (moi ou les autres) juste pour gratter du fric. Si cela fait de moi un grand méchant, c’est dommage. But a cult needs a sacrifice to solidify itself — something given up in order to separate their self-sustained, self-created reality from the outside world. In the case of a cult of personalities, something needs to be sacrificed to the personality — something to break critical thinking and create totally uncritical adoration and deep loyalty for the figure, as well as a rejection of an external ‘them’. This, in effect, removes the followers’ freedom, making them bow to the leader’s whims. Jim Jones’ followers left family, friends and modern convenience behind. Charles Manson’s followers gave up their autonomy. The Germans sacrificed their rights to Hitler. The followers of Heaven’s Gate’s Marshall Applewhite relinquished their worldly possessions to join him, which, for some, even included surgical castration. While I am no expert on cults, I believe this is what Musk is doing. His followers came to him as Tesla stock investors or board members with large stakes in the company. Now, he is sacrificing Tesla’s core business to the rhetoric that brought them in. This has kicked away the support for the stock and sacrificed the real value in the investment these followers have made, leaving only Musk’s personality and rhetoric, and these investors’ belief in said personality and rhetoric, to prop up its value. If they break ranks, they all lose their investment. This means they have effectively given up their freedom to the leader, and uncritical adoration and loyalty ensue as coping mechanisms. The sacrifice has been made, the lines between Musk’s unreality and actual reality have been drawn, and control has been handed over to the leader. With this sacrifice, Tesla has solidified its transformation into a cult. It is no longer a business; it no longer reflects reality; it is now a stock cult that worships the corpse of a business that Musk sacrificed to himself.
