7. The harm of ’AI’ is not what it does, but what it licenses. People are perfectly capable of acting out incorrect ideas. ‘AI’ can and has been used to replace humans in jobs it’s absolutely not capable of performing — but if not it, capital would merely have secured the next excuse. At the same time opposition to AI art has almost universally proceeded by accepting the claims of its advocates and a fighting retreat into a fundamentally reactionary conception of art using attacks also mounted against digital painting, sampling, photography, and collage. ‘AI’ does not particularly threaten art, but it is fearsome to those invested in the sacrosanct ‘originality’ of mediocre artists; and they do threaten art.
4. AI art is a medium. It’s impossible to fully replicate works of one medium in another. A jpg will never be a Rembrandt if for no other reason than that the latter is not made of pixels. AI art is a form of collage.
3. ‘AI’ can’t do the things required of it. Generative neural networks will never be able to accurately reproduce fingers, architecture, or writing, or be able to retain consistency across a series of images, because they have no grasp of the meaning of images and lack any model of such things as anatomy or perspective, and cannot gain it no matter how complex they’re made. Their operation is not the operation of a human artist planning, executing, and revising a work. This ‘facial depixellator’ was supposed to make identifiable faces out of pixellated ones — an impossible task that would require it to defeat entropy. Instead it turns Obama into Jared who plays lacrosse.
2. ‘AI’ does not replace labour. The operation of a neural network requires humans to produce the corpus, to teach it, and, last and least, to write the prompts and curate the results. Feeding AI‐generated content to an ‘AI’ produces rubbish as the loss of information from the corpus cascades. Marx’s theory of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall states that capital will seek to reduce labour costs by automation; but the greater the amount of capital invested in automation and the less in labour, the less effective this will be. Lenin’s theory of imperialism states that to escape this quandary, capital will increasingly outsource labour to colonised nations, where it remains cheap. ‘AI’ produces the appearance of automation through exploiting already‐done labour. (Consider Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ technology, which turned out to be a thousand underpaid workers in India.)
