“Granted Exceptionalism” is best explained by bluster-monkey Sean Hannity, who frequently proclaims that America is the “greatest gift God ever gave to this earth.” In this view, America’s greatness is a character trait given by the almighty, an inherent virtue that can only be lost if people stray from the faith. The role of today’s greatness-talking presidential candidates is that of the old testament prophet: to proclaim the danger of the present Obama-led straying and call for a return to the path of faith to the Great Mythical Redeemer, Ronald Reagan. It’s a world where our personal moral choices matter and our personal faith in that greatness is of fundamental importance. It’s all very Protestant. On the other side of the argument is is “Earned Exceptionalism.” In the earned exceptionalism narrative, America is not inherently great, but rather must always strive to earn her leadership role in the world. Great nations do great things. Greatness can only be achieved by doing big things, great things, in service to our people and the international order — a moral wrapping around liberal internationalism that moves beyond the stale language of international governance. It’s not about faith, it’s about practice, and it’s all very Catholic.
