LED bulbs can be almost indestructible. Lower the voltage going through them and add more diodes. White LED has forward voltage of 3.4V, but normally manufacturers use them at 3.9 and higher to get more brightness and shorter life span.
It's great, and the LEDs have moved on further since first published - an "A" rated LED now has 200 lumens per Watt.
LED bulbs are still improving. I bought a GU10 recently that is 2W and 360lm, so 180lm per watt.
Of course Edison's design didn't really work and he teamed up with British inventor Jospeh Swan to produce a commercially viable bulb. Enough with the "great man" theory of science. Teamwork is everything. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_...
