It was likely some sort of large gas (or water) exchange structure, made of a lignin-like material. It reminds me of Pneumatophores from various plants; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerial_... Their giant size makes me wonder if their environment was periodically flooded, such that they acted as snorkels.
