When landmark Rascalz tune sent Canadian hip-hop into a new era similar explosion was happening in cities like Toronto & Vancouver: DnB. Drawing on hip-hop & reggae inspirations of his roots Gerald ventures to new territory with breaks & dub bass coming together with electronic acid house technique. Yesterday's Trainspottle was MC Conrad & Makoto - Golden Girl. Established as a great example of the global drum & bass progression, Makoto's production talent & musical sense with Conrad's perfectly complementary vocals in this amen journey really nail the energy of the Good Looking vision that the legendary MC and LTJ Bukem repped for so long. Yesterday's Trainspottle was Roni Size Reprazent - Watching Windows (DJ Die Gnarly Vocal Mix). Die gives Reprazent's funky original an extra push towards the dancefloor that fires on all crowd-pleasing cylinders: rolling amens, synth loops & basslines. An old skool gem bringing together many things in a bubbling '91: Detroit techno influence, bleeps, hip-house MCing, breaks, basslines & soulful vocals. Yesterday's Trainspottle was Orgy - Blue Monday (Optical Instrumental Mix). Putting the late-90s rock cover aside this is about Optical flexing the Virus sound as it arrived on the scene. With gamechanger alien bass, tight drums & neurofunk-defining groove, like New Order before bridging & evolving sounds, this would brighten any d'n'b head's Monday.

BLACK PEOPLE INVENTED TECHNO" Fascinated with technology, science fiction, Funk, and futurism, Juan Atkins grew up in Detroit in the 1970s learning to play music. Destined for the Motor City's thriving underground party scene, Juan and his friends began DJing and tinkering with drum machines, making futuristic electronic music that they called "Techno." In 1988, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Santonio Echols, Eddie Fowlkes, and Blake Baxter, now known as the Techno 6, released their first compilation record, "Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit" on Virgin Records. The Detroit sound was a hit and exploded in Europe. Techno was on the radio, on MTV, and popular on dancefloors. A new music genre was born! "I called my music Techno music from the start because I always felt my music was born from technology." - Juan Atkins The Techno 6 paved the way for several different forms of electronic music to successfully follow. Over the next 40 years, a multi-billion dollar dance music industry emerged, benefitting mostly white musicians-leaving the Techno 6 largely forgotten. "God Said Give 'Em Drum Machines" sets the record straight, giving a name and a face to the true Black creators of Techno music who changed the course of Black history and music history forever.

Yesterday's Trainspottle was Goldie - Kemistry VIP (Grooverider Remix). The Rufige heartbeat remixed by the Rider showing one of the places that future artistic vision could go, where it had gone. Still on the sharpest metal edge, a broken down #drumandbass soundscape, for the soundsystem. Inspired by those around (RIP), immersed in the underground.

Yesterday's Trainspottle no.1000 was Cyba Space ft. Shanie - You're Gonna Miss My Face (Dillinja remix). Fast Floor expanding their electronic production skills with soulful stylings of dance songstress Shanie take things a brilliant step further with top tier d'n'b remixes. Dillinja's mid-'97 creativity with heavy drums and melodic bass show his evolving urban flavour headed from Cyba Space to Cybotron.
Yesterday's Trainspottle no.999 was Freestyles - Play The Game. It's DJ Zinc finding the perfect mix of samples, tougher beats, heavy bass notes and even amens to make the rave jump-up with a unique urban flavour and balanced jungle/drum & bass sound few bring like the True Playaz.
Yesterday's Trainspottle no.998 was Special Forces - The End (Remix)..Revisiting Robert Owens' rich vocal flavour originally from downtempo "Can't Come Down" Photek seamlessly melds classic house universality with his modern sonics. Moving the soundsystem and dance with raw drum & bass weight precisely placed details perfect this slice of dark soul.

Yesterday's Trainspottle no.996 was Peshay - Switch. Defining the era's jazz'n'bass with organic warmth and Decoder's engineering dancefloors are transported in a smoky groove. The switch is more than the changeup and samples here but Peshay drawing a line from the jazz greats to the malleable drum & bass blueprint with finesse.

Yesterday's Trainspottle no.995 was Trace - Sonar..With its sparse melody, heavy Reese bassline and Tramen beats (or Dramen with credit to Dom) Trace's Prototype release being battered by DJs years after the initial techsteppin' mutation keeps the dark drum & bass flag flying high as it tears up raves around the globe.
Yesterday's Trainspottle no.994 was 3 Way - Replay. Dope Dragon's underground delights consistently deliver and this jungle tearout gets right to it. Not just about the amens tho as the sub-bass gets progressively lower and wobblier showing the power of Mask, Gang Related & Swabe's subtle wayz. Bristolian drum & bass for more than the 20th Century.
Yesterday's Trainspottle no.993 was M.I.S.T. - Barracuda. Always drawing from their love of the music and its electronic evolution the duo spins their creative chamber pushing forward with modern drum & bass energy. A big catchy bassline melody and hardcore tinges propel this direct to the target: party time in the rave.
Yesterday's Trainspottle was Digital - Latest Request. Reminding the scene of its roots & culture Digital's millennium charge with contemporaries into loopy breakbeat-infused, bass-weighty, dub soundsystem chatting drum & bass is full of raw old skool essence and more than effective in the rave.
