Data shows that in the years of 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018, employee owners (EOs) are significantly less likely to be laid off in the previous year compared to non-employee owners (NEOs).

The Small Business Closure Crisis

Baby boomers own over half of all privately held firms in the United States.

This Silver Tsunami of retiring business owners own over 2.9 million firms which represent half of all job-creating businesses in the country. These firms employ roughly 32 million workers and generate nearly $6.5 trillion in revenue. As most of these owners retire, our local business landscape is going through a dramatic shift.

6 out of 10 business owners plan to sell in the next decade. By selling to their employees, owners can secure their legacy and keep these businesses and jobs in the community.

Working people deserve a living wage.

When workers earn more, they spend more. Business revenues increase, allowing them to expand, pay workers more, offer better benefits, and hire additional workers. More people are able to enter the workforce and earn money, further increasing the aggregate demand for goods and services in the economy. Both workers and businesses benefit through this positive cycle of economic and job growth. As workers have greater purchasing power, they are able to buy more and healthier goods, supporting a more healthy society that is less reliant on the healthcare system. This frees up resources for doctors and hospitals to treat people more efficiently, further contributing to a healthy population.

Contrast this with an economy of workers that earn poverty and slave wages. More of the wealth is funneled to the already rich, who tend to save a greater proportion of their income than those who are poor. Less money is circulating between disadvantaged and vulnerable groups, decreasing their purchasing power and living standards. Business revenues decrease, causing a contraction as workers are laid off to compensate for the loss in profit. This is a recessionary cycle that decreases living standards for most people. This occured during the Great Depression and Great Recession.
