After getting a $31.5M increase in funding in the 2026 budget, OPS is forecasting a $20-25M deficit in 2026.The Finance and Audit Committee documents for the August 7 meeting say that OPS would be on track for $30M deficit if it weren't for the $8.5M in "efficiencies" that they had found. Last year (2025), OPS ran a $15.6M deficit, after having received a $17M approved budget increase. OPS' deficits get paid out of City of Ottawa reserve funds after being rubber-stamped by OPSB.
August 1, 2026 marks a sad day in the history of the City of Ottawa with respect to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, as the City of Ottawa's Safe Access By-law (better known as the bubble by-law) comes into effect.
