This keynote will address the contemporary intersection of technology and academic libraries using the framework of Eric Zimmerman's Manifesto of the Ludic Century. Zimmerman argues that games are the definitional cultural form of the 21st century and that the logic of games will increasingly shape culture. Games are like libraries - interesting, beautiful, and useless -- useless until animated by others who decide to join in. Looking at the world through the lens of game design can be useful when exploring life with agentic systems, as games can be understood as an art form where agency itself is explored. Games allow us to explore systems that are already familiar to us while allowing us to also explore and co-create new potential futures. The qualities that make play so joyful and generative are not unlike the qualities of what Ursula Franklin called holistic technologies: technologies that allow the individual to change rules and conditions to better fit their immediate needs. Games show us that we can find freedom within constraint through a ludic approach. Indeed, our collective planetary survival may depend upon our ability to accept limitations and to change ourselves rather than our environment. Games model technologies that afford consent, a feature tragically missing from the encroaching Ai infrastructures that are currently taking root. And gamification illustrates the dangers of when we unduly focus on the score instead of the play. A rare example of a well-defined, useful, but noncomputable problem is the halting problem. Imagine that I want to write a computer program and determine whether or not that program will eventually stop. If the program being examined has no loops or recursive subroutine calls, it is bound to finish eventually, but if it does have such constructs the program may well go on forever. It turns out that there is no algorithm for examining a program and determining whether or not it is fatally infected with an endless loop. The Battle of Windsor was a short-lived campaign in the eastern Michigan area of the United States and the Windsor area of Upper Canada. A group of men on both sides of the border, calling themselves "Patriots", formed small militias in 1837 with the intention of seizing the Southern Ontario peninsula between the Detroit and Niagara Rivers and extending American-style government to Canada.[1] They based groups in Michigan at Fort Gratiot (present Port Huron), Mount Clemens, Detroit, and Gibraltar. The Patriots were defeated by British and American government forces, respectively.

Under a Watchful Eye: A Case Study of Police Surveillance During the 1930s Michael Lonardo pp. 11–42 Abstract EN: During the 1930s the Communist Party of Canada organized and promoted the working-class struggle against conditions resulting from the Depression. And while some have argued that the state's intelligence community paid little attention to the efforts of the communists between the wars, the evidence reveals a major operation on the part of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to watch and suppress Communist Party activities. By tracing the involvement of World War I veteran and Communist Party activist, Stewart O'Neil, in four radical movements — the Workers Ex-Servicemen's League, the On-to-Ottawa trek, the workers' theatre movement, and the Spanish Civil War— this paper demonstrates the extent of, and the tactics used by the RCMP in its surveillance and suppression of these radical movements. Information Extraction (IE) is a fundamental task in information retrieval, encompassing sub-tasks such as named entity recognition (NER) and event extraction (EE). IE has evolved significantly over the years. Initially, the focus was on structured and semi-structured data extraction, employing various techniques, tools, and systems to extract useful information automatically [37]. Early IE systems were primarily rule-based, relied on a large amount of human involvement, and were tailored for specific domains like chemical or medical search [38–43]
Are Language Models More Like Libraries or Like Librarians? Bibliotechnism, the Novel Reference Problem, and the Attitudes of LLMs Harvey Lederman, Kyle Mahowald Are LLMs cultural technologies like photocopiers or printing presses, which transmit information but cannot create new content? A challenge for this idea, which we call bibliotechnism, is that LLMs often do generate entirely novel text. We begin by defending bibliotechnism against this challenge, showing how novel text may be meaningful only in a derivative sense, so that the content of this generated text depends in an important sense on the content of original human text. We go on to present a different, novel challenge for bibliotechnism, stemming from examples in which LLMs generate "novel reference", using novel names to refer to novel entities. Such examples could be smoothly explained if LLMs were not cultural technologies but possessed a limited form of agency (beliefs, desires, and intentions). According to inter
