Third, paint away! The gubbins at the back help further obscure the rear of the coaster and help the base blend into the backdrop. I admit I used an indoor kid (a Hadrey by @awkwpengu.bsky.social as my subject ) so she sticks out in the outdoor setting but you get the idea!
Second, keep a flat(ish) area in the center that can accommodate a base. Since I paint a variety of scales, I try to make it 50mm or so in diameter. Because I want to use it with different scales, I avoid gubbins like signs that would look weird too big or too small.
First, use a square coaster, usually 4"x4" Layer up some cork sheets to give it an incline at the front 30% and back 10%. This helps you keep the front lip out of the shot and breaks up the silhouette at the rear.
