"Right, right." Luna tentatively touched my elbow as she brought the warm, bright Casio to my face. I sucked the lit joint like a baby bottle, like my life depended on it. It occurred to me that taking all that gear at once might have been what made me lose it, but it was impossible to actually say. The few times I'd gotten separated from Miya had been in relatively close proximity: different rooms in a hotel, at home when I woke up to pee and passed out on the couch, or one time I got cholera from eating an oyster and had to stay in the hospital overnight. They let Miya sleep with me after we bawled and wailed. She ended up nodding off in the chair next to the bed—I couldn't feel her, but I could hear her breathing. We followed the storm drain home without too much trouble. Something about the wind in my face kept me on an even keel, the way I could move through the world now, with a balance that I didn't have three weeks ago. I thought to myself, just so that I could calm myself down: I should be fine if I'm anywhere in Almaty. If I've got these skates, I can get back to her. But my dream of driving a car down the open road... it felt so distant now. My life felt like it was over before it started. I'd never be able to do it. It was this shit forever.
