Dean keeps his phone on silent. He never used to, before the divorce, when he still thought he mattered. But now, nothing is urgent, and no one really needs him. They can wait until he's sober, until he's coherent enough to handle a conversation. Sometimes that can be hours, sometimes days. But the sound of a phone ringing startles him out of bed, and Dean is on the floor, sifting through the pile of tangled clothes. His jeans are all entwined with Castiel's. His shirt is across the room. Castiel's t-shirt is crumpled and half-hiding under the bed frame, the phone peeking out from under it. It's Castiel's phone that's ringing, but Dean picks it up and puts it on the bed anyway, refusing to look at who's calling. It's probably. some boyfriend or wife asking Castiel where he's been all night. Dean finds his own phone halfway across the room, near a chair that wobbles when he walks by. He has seven missed calls in the last half hour. Four of them are from his partner, Detective Lee Webb. Two of them are from Captain Bobby Singer. The most recent one is from Dean's father, six minutes ago, at 7:12 am. His father never calls him.

"Relax," Dean whispers, his voice drowned out by the fading siren. His lips trail across Castiel's throat and work their way up to Castiel's mouth. He kisses Castiel slowly, his tongue wandering in between Castiel's teeth, his fingers digging into the flesh on Castiel's arm. "Wait." Castiel breaks away from Dean just enough to breathe. "I know why I need this tonight. Why are you here? I just need to know, before we do this."

The tiled floor is stained with footprints, and there's a garbage pail overflowing with empty bottles and cans by a No Smoking sign. The smell of cigarettes is a confession that no one's following any rules here. One elevator is out of order. The other opens to a man and woman in wrinkled clothes who don't speak or look at each other as they step into the lobby. Castiel presses the "2" button. It doesn't light up but the elevator starts to rise. They should have taken the stairs, but who knows what happens in the stairwell at this place. Castiel isn't sure he wants to find out. "So, who got killed here?" Castiel rests against the wall, feeling it shake against his back. "Some guy who was sleeping with his best friend's wife. Best friend figured it out, followed them here, shot them both. She lived. He was DOA." Dean is twirling the key around his finger. "Kind of thing that happens all the time." "You really did take me to a murder motel, I guess." The elevator doors open, and Castiel steps out, into the hall that's lit only by a single overhead light. "Hopefully not in Room 29 though."
