Humans routinely use their environment when solving problems that require complex inferences22–25 . For example, a police investiga- tor may use an evidence board to solve a criminal case. After an initial look, she generates a first interpretation of the evidence. This interpretation may trigger her to reconfigure the evidence board according to this initial hypothesis. Subsequent inspection of this new configuration may then lead her—even in the absence of new evidence—to a novel interpretation and another reconfiguration of the board and so on22 .
