I originally created an account and promptly left, similar to your experience. Since returning a few months ago, my experience has been entirely with the Mastodon app for Android and their web client. It seems every bit as straightforward as other social media these days imo

One button push to add image(s) via photo gallery, alt text available, custom "content warning" fields for self-moderation, polls. Not overly designed, but really functional in my experience. Hope this is more the answer you've been looking for.
