Our testing found some progress. Harmful eating disorder recommendations to simulated 13-year-old girls dropped from 1 in 3 in 2024 to 1 in 9 in 2026 across the US, UK and EU. That happened after online safety rules came into force – showing the positive effects regulation can have on platforms.

If YouTube knows this content is harmful, why isn't it treating it that way? None of the harmful eating disorder videos we identified displayed a crisis resource panel. Even YouTube's own safety measures aren't being applied consistently.
