Doug Lemov 8h Doug Lemov's Field Notes Cognitive patience is the idea that the mental willingness to stay with difficult, slow, or initially unrewarding thinking is a critical attribute. Maryanne Wolf writes about it in Reader Come Home, The Reading Brain in a Digital World. Students who are impulsive, easily distracted, put off by a hard slog are rarely those who accomplish great things and contribute most to the endeavors of their lives. Learning to resist the urge for immediate gratification and instant understanding and having the capacity to allow comprehension to emerge over time over time are important habits of mind. This is one reason why it’s so important for students to read not just books but great books. A book rewards cognitive patience and a great book rewards it greatly. The payoff is important. It makes the case for bearing the upfront cost.

With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the East Coast, Wonder co-founder and CEO Zach Lahn found a way to work the storm into Wednesday’s lesson plan. Armed with a leaf blower, Lahn took his students outside to test their makeshift structures, built to withstand hurricane-force winds. “It’s all about relevance,” Lahn said of his teaching style. Wonder, a Koch-family funded private school, opened Sept. 4 in a renovated space in Wichita State’s former Printing Services building. Thirty-nine students, ages three to 11, now attend school daily on campus. “Very quickly, I realized just how much of a dedication there is to like, innovative thinking here at Wichita State,” Lahn said. Lahn co-founded Wonder with Annie Koch, Charles Koch’s daughter-in-law. He said WSU is the ideal location for a school that invests in children and fosters creativity.

The Science of Reading on Social Media: TikTok ContentCreators' Discourse Patterns and Bodies of Knowledge: The Science of Reading (SOR) has become a public discourse with educational stakeholders, impacting legislative policy, readingcontent, curricula, and pedagogy across schools. Public engagement in this movement has transpired on social media, includingTikTok, where viral content often promotes narrow or binary viewpoints through an authoritative discourse. Using a digital eth-nography and walkthrough method, we collected and examined 156 TikTok videos on #ScienceofReading to address the follow-ing research questions: (1) What categories of SOR content are present on TikTok? (2) What are the common narrative trends andbodies of knowledge used to promote the SOR conversation on TikTok? Analyses found that SOR-related TikToks fell into fourcategories: (1) professional content knowledge, (2) direct demonstration, (3) resources and materials, and (4) identity formation.Furthermore, close analysis of all videos related to professional content knowledge gave insight into the narrative trends usedby content creators to convey claims (plain speak, stop/start, brain research, rhetorical question, I used to… now I…), as well asthe bodies of knowledge content creators drew on to make these claims (research, SOR, theory or scholar, deep personal experi-ence, no source). Finally, implications are discussed for how this public discourse can shape policies that will ultimately impactschools, classrooms, and literacy instruction.
The results of this study corroborate what Cooper and colleagues (2006) cautioned—that “too much homework may diminish its effectiveness, or even become counterproductive” (p. 53). We find that more time spent on homework is associated with greater stress; more compromised health; and less time for family, friends, and other extracurricular pursuits. Although effect sizes from the quantitative data were small, students who completed more hours of homework per night were at greater risk for these negative outcomes; they were also more likely to drop activities or hobbies they enjoyed in order to focus on their academic work. The students’ comments in the open-ended section of our survey corroborate and extend the quantitative findings, revealing that students recognize the adverse consequences of high-quantity, yet seemingly low-quality, homework. Although we found that students completing more hours of homework also tended to report greater behavioral engagement in their schoolwork and classes (as measured by students reporting they often or always try hard, pay attention, and complete assignments), this connection does not mean these students were deeply learning the material, enjoying the work or finding it meaningful or helpful. There was no relation between homework hours and students’ enjoyment of schoolwork, and open-ended responses revealed students will often do work they see as “pointless,”

In the first year after adoption, disciplinary incidents increase and student subjective well-being falls, consistent with short-term disruption. However, effects on well-being become positive in later years and disciplinary effects fade. For academic achievement, average effects on test scores are consistently close to zero. High schools see modest positive effects, particularly in math, while middle schools see small negative effects. We find little evidence of effects on school attendance, self-reported classroom attention, or perceived online bullying."

Conclusions Implications The findings in the present study reveal (a) the extent to which academic boredom is related to students’ learning and achievement, (b) the effect of age groups on the above relationship, and (c) the influences of academic boredom on students’ motivation, use of study strategies and achievement. The overall negative relationship, r = −.24, between academic boredom and academic outcomes, provides some support for the detrimental effects of being bored in academic-related situations. Despite the small-medium magnitude of the overall effect size, as Coe (2002) notes, an effect size as small as d = .10 (equivalent to r = .05) is meaningful in educational contexts given the accumulated effects over time on students’ academic attainment. In addition, Ferguson (2009) suggests r = .20 as the Brecommended minimum effect size^ (p. 533) for practical utility. Given that experience of boredom in academic-related situations can accumulate over both short (e.g., minutes and hours) and long (e.g., days and semesters) period of time, coupled with at least a practically useful effect size magnitude between boredom and academic outcomes, our results indicate the importance of intervening this negative emotion. For educators, it is important to design appropriate curriculum and learning contexts, and to provide quality instruction that may help to alleviate this negative emotion. As Pekrun (2006) notes, a learning environment (e.g., task demands and feedback on students’ attainment) entails distal factors that affect how students interpret their learning situations and emotions.

The main finding shows that 60% of students feel excited about school when the teacher makes the topic exciting and interesting, tied with 60% who say they are excited when the topic is something they wanted to learn more about. Other reasons include hands-on learning (46%), novelty and real-world connections (35% each), everyday usefulness (28%), job relevance (25%), technology use (23%), difficulty/challenge (17%), while 4% say they never felt excited and 2% selected something else. The data is presented as a simple numbered list with percentages.

Our analyses of the PISA data suggest that teaching reading in England has been less successful since the introduction of more emphasis on synthetic phonics, although the correlations reported here require further research. In relation to the national curricula of the regions that we reviewed there is little evidence to suggest that a synthetic phonics first-and-foremost orientation to national curricula is likely to be the most effective orientation.
