Cowrite tip #5: It's going to be hard. Embrace the journey & find your community. Writing is an art. It is a craft. It will take time and passion to develop a book that will sit on shelves. Don’t rush the process, but don’t give-up either. Keep a “nice things” folder: with praise, what you love about your book, and why you write. Take a look at these notes when you are feeling creatively depleted or down on the process. Find a community (like COwrite) that will support you through the ups and downs and make publishing feel more transparent and accessible. With B&W stack of books on the right
COwrite tip #4: Read as much as you can. Seriously. A lot. Read in the genre and category you are writing and beyond. Assess characters, plot, and line level prose. Pay attention to what you think makes a book work (or not work). Take books apart, re-read them, study them. Not only will it help you understand the market, but reading and studying craft widely can act as a sort of DIY MFA. With b&w ring of books around the edge of image
Cowrite tip #3: Layer stakes and plot. Make choices cost your characters something on both a global plot level and a personal, emotional level. Your characters should make mistakes as they learn and grow. The messier the choices the more intense the conflict With B&W books on bottom
COwrite #2 tip: Make writing a habit. Set time aside (ideally) daily to touch base with your book. Even if you are just researching or building character backstory or worldbuilding, connecting with your book on a regular basis will allow you to live in the world and access the characters and story more easily. Writing Tip #1 from Cowrite: Write from your heart. Don’t be swayed by trends. Publishing is a slow processes and more often than not if you are writing to trends you’ll miss them. Instead, write what calls to you. And write it well! Why are you the best person to tell this story? Read lots in your genre and know what’s popular, but don’t feel like you need to replicate it! Meeting the founder and instructor at Cowrite: Paige Terlip is a literary agent at the Andrea Brown Literary Agency representing award-winning, #1 NYT, Indie, and international bestselling authors, as well as debuts. She comes to agenting with a background in marketing, graphic design, and freelance editorial. She has an MA in Children's Literature and an MFA in Writing for Children from Simmons University, and is co-chair on the Association of American Literary Agents' Communications Committee.
