They move behind the dim veil of snow and twilight with the purposeful strides of actors on a stage. Aziraphale can feel his heart thrumming in his palm. The bookshop appears through a fog of thoughts, none of which are angelic in nature. “Come inside?” Aziraphale asks. “As if you could keep me away,” Crowley replies, low and rumbling in a way that makes Aziraphale hum. He hadn’t been able to meet his gaze for the rest of their conversation. Later that night at least nine thousand stars are looking down. Stede does enjoy an audience. When Izzy passes across the scrim of night sky, Stede can see the narrowing of his eyes in the low light. “It’s not a trap,” Stede says with a laugh. He reaches out and Izzy huffs in submission, letting himself be pulled forward. The sea applauds, everything crashing together at once. Stede is dizzy by the time they pull apart, lips still brushing, breath still crossing. His arms are around Izzy’s shoulders, one hand at the back of his head. Very romantic.

There was something I started many lifetimes ago, in an act of defiance to my fate. An aftermath of white wings and heavy rainfall that made me think perhaps I was not so irredeemable. It was a secret thing. I swore I would die with it, held within the cage of my chest like a frightened bird. I would consume it, like a hungry snake, before eating my own tail. I begin pressing songs and stories into the palms of the people, passing you from heart to heart, from mouth to mouth, hoping it will reach your ears. Painting your soft shape against smooth stone walls. Carving your name into thick clay tablets. Scrolls are smeared with inky words I can never speak aloud. Marble carvings, a brilliant white flecked with gold and gray, smoothed and creased into the gentle curve of your mouth. I brush my lips to yours, and you are cold as packed earth.
