These are just the words that were behind the animals: I don't have much to say this pride month. I'm a little over two months post-top surgery and right now I feel the most/least like a man that I've ever felt. Though I've never felt like much of anything human, when I was a kid I would fantasize about turning myself into a dragon before turning myself into a man. I'd want to play as the shapeshifting animal before playing as the boy (though of course, I'd still play as the boy. Someone had to do it). I'd pick boys to have pretend crushes on in case my friends asked me, but I think I had more infatuation for cartoon animals than I did for other kids my age (hi spirit: stallion of the cimarron, Diego from ice age, and Thomas O'Malley from the aristocats...). There's an undeniable queerness to that experience in and of itself. I feel the most gay, the most trans, the most queer, when I can play the part of a funny animal. Medical transition is the next best option once you learn that you can't really become a dragon (yet!) Humanity, gender, and sexuality are just performance. A face to be worn and a pair of feet to slip on. Right now I am lucky to have the choice to perform. I can perform "MAN" if I'd like, and when I choose to do so it's for my own benefit. Even if I hate performing. How surreal it is to be alive in the time of science and choice, synthetic hormones and surgical intervention and all things furry. In my grand queer fantasies I am nothing more than I already am, which is to say I am still just an animal, and I am choice and instinct. All I do is react. I was the messenger of secret notes as a kid, never the sender nor the receiver. Even now, I just sit and watch. It's lonely, but there's something special about being an observer rather than a participant. When you're in it, you have no time to think. When you watch, all you can do is think.
