“The things which, for want of better terms, we try to convey by the concepts of culture,
discipline, taste, standards, criticism and a sense of history – they hate them. Or,
if you prefer, they are completely insensitive to them and wish to impose
their own insensitivity upon the next generation. They are genuinely
sceptical of intellectual distinctions which they do not perceive, and
aesthetic values which they do not feel. They are fiercely resentful of what
they regard as the haughty arrogance of those who possess or strive for
some distant touch or faint hint of the culture and discipline which
they denounce as shibboleths, taboos, and the arbitrary conventions of
pedants. . . . The purpose, or, at any rate, the tendency of their policies
is to stamp out and eradicate these things and to instil exclusively
their own tastes and ideals by controlling American education with the
political efficiency of Prussian autocracy and the fanatical intolerance
of the French anticlericals. Greek and Latin have become mere symbols
and pretexts. They are as contemptuous of Dante, Shakespeare, Milton,
Racine, Burke, John Stuart Mill, Tennyson, Alexander Hamilton, or

Verächtlich reckte er den Kopf. Offenbar hatte sie das Falsche gesagt. Sie verfolgte, wie das sonderbare Wesen in der Kapelle auf und ab ging. Aus dem Schweigen geboren und von unbekannten Gefühlen getragen, verschwand es, als Mr Emerson sich wieder zu ihnen gesellte und Lucy in die Welt raschzüngiger Unterhaltung zurückkehren konnte - die einzige Welt, die ihr vertraut war.
