But that's exactly what we found! And they look very different, with the SST-targeting population being largely bipolar cells, as expected, but the basket-targeting population being wispy bipolar cells. Now we have a new, highly specialized knob controlling cortical computations!

The second surprise came when looking at excitatory neurons. No matter what way you looked at their morphology and synaptic features, we kept finding unexpected subdivisions. Layer 2 and layer 3, often considered together in visual cortex, were distinct. Layer 5 had more clusters than expected, too.
