Assistance robots are the future for people who need daily care due to limited mobility or being wheelchair-bound. Current solutions of attaching robotic arms to motorized wheelchairs only provide limited additional mobility at the cost of increased size. We present a mouth joystick control interface, augmented with voice commands, for an independent quadrupedal assistance robot with an arm. We validate and showcase our system in the Cybathlon [1] Challenges February 2024 Assistance Robot Race, where we solve four everyday tasks in record time, winning first place.

Review and Analysis of Platform-Related Performance of Rehabilitation Lower Limb Exoskeletons
CYBATHLON 2024: Breaking Barriers for Inclusion and Innovation uniting the public, researchers, developers, and people with disabilities, fostering global collaboration and empowerment! From 25 to 27 October 2024, the CYBATHLON will take place in a global format in the Arena Schluefweg in Stadt Kloten near Zurich and local hubs worldwide. Around 100 international teams from the worlds of academia and industry will compete in a unique competition. Two more disciplines are added to the original six: a race using smart visual assistive technologies and a race using assistive robots.
How can people with spinal cord injury move and interact at eye level using exoskeletons? Exoskeletons have been developed since the 1960s. At the CYBATHLON 2024 in October, teams will demonstrate how people with paraplegia use this technology to solve tasks of daily life. Join us on the Road to 2024 - register your team now! CYBATHLON Arm Prosthesis Race Task - Do-it-Yourself
The team SmartArM has been participating in the CYBATHLON Arm Prosthesis Race. For the first time in 2024, they will be participating in the Robot Assistance Race as well starting with the CYBATHLON Challenges on 2 Feb 2024. Building on the experience gathered when competing in the ARM race, they take on this new challenge to demonstrate more of their team’s innovation in robotic arm control.

How does CYBATHLON promote active participation and inclusion of people with disabilities in the design and evaluation of advanced assistive technologies (AAT)? The AATs aim to exploit the vast potential of technological developments made in the past decades to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities. In this work, Jan Thomas Meyer, and Selina Weber et al. investigate the AAT development, usability, and user involvement in the context of the CYBATHLON. They conclude that the CYBATHLON positively fulfils its conceptual goals of promoting active participation and inclusion of people with disabilities in the design and evaluation of AAT, thereby stimulating the development of promising novel technological solutions.
Although robots cannot replace human caregivers, they can provide support so that caregivers have more time to provide the personal, human touch. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is testing various robotic care assistants in a series of projects. One of the DLR projects is EDAN which participated in the CYBATHLON Challenges in March 2023 in the Assistance Robot Race. EDAN is a wheelchair with a lightweight robotic arm and hand. It is moved with a joystick or via muscle signals measured directly on the surface of the person's skin. EDAN can also be moved by relatives via smartphones or tablets and remote control from a care control centre is possible. We eagerly look forward to your EDAN team's participation in the CYBATHLON 2024 in October.
