Seokjin groaned and slumped back into his seat. “That’s not what I’m saying, I’m just tired.” Of this city.  “No, I think you’re lonely,” Jungkook said tentatively.
They were alphas, and in the small space, their strong scents suddenly overpowered the lukewarm barbecue leftovers. Namjoon tried to breathe through his mouth, but the taste embedded itself there too, complimentary scents of saltwater and smoke. He felt strangely like he was at the beach during dusk, the scent of youth.

Was it normal to spend six months sulking over a breakup? Namjoon wasn’t sure - this was his first heartbreak, his first love, his first time walking into his apartment and seeing boxes lining the wall, his boyfriend of four years admitting that he’d found love somewhere else. The space felt empty now, his coffee mug sitting lonely on the counter without its chipped counterpart. The walls were half-empty too, and Namjoon had spent one too many nights staring at the blank space and envisioning what could’ve been. His ex hadn’t been a fan of Namjoon’s artistic choices, choosing instead to decorate their walls with landscapes and posed vacation pictures. Those were gone now, but Namjoon still saw them when he closed his eyes, and so he needed to fill the blank space, and soon. ( The gallery had been a recommendation from Yoongi of all people. “I’m cultured,” he’d said defensively when Namjoon gaped at his organized list of recommendations. “I know art.” “Do you, hyung?” Namjoon asked, and Yoongi glared at him. “I mean, I’m sure you’re cultured but…” “Trust me, Namjoon-ah, go to the first one and tell me I’m wrong.” ) Yoongi was not wrong. Namjoon felt a glimmer of hope when he stepped through the doors, natural light streaming through high windows and falling like silk over wide canvases, the muted shadows of the clouds almost becoming art themselves. He fell into the world created by the studio - a story of soft, downtrodden earth becoming something beautiful and full of life. “You like it,” a deep voice said behind him, and Namjoon jumped about a foot in the air. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. I didn’t realize you were so lost.” “Lost?” Namjoon turned and was met with soulful chocolate eyes beneath carefully tousled hair, cheekbones that soared into his temples and a jaw that could cut glass. Lost. That was one word for it. Namjoon hadn’t blushed in over six months, but he felt his face grow warm as the sun peeked out like a spotlight from the window.…

Yoongi was very happy for his friend, truly! So happy, so fucking happy, thrilled beyond belief, ecstatic for his future, over the moon! “Yes, you seem happy,” Seokjin said flatly. “Which is why your napkin is torn to shreds, I can definitely see how that is a sign of how happy you are.” Yoongi stared down at the table, and sure enough, the napkin meant to be under his sweating drink was torn into small pieces, scattering like snowflakes over the dark tablecloth. “Just admit you’re pissed you lost your roommate.” “He was a good roommate,” Yoongi groaned, letting his head fall onto the table. “Hoseok is the best roommate I’ve ever had!” “Rude, I was your roommate first.” “Yeah, my point still stands.” Yoongi lifted his head back up and felt tiny pieces of napkin stick to his skin. Before Seokjin could laugh at him (and he would, the bastard), Yoongi brushed them off and stared sullenly at his almost-empty cocktail. “Why did Jimin have to swoop in over the break?” “It’s called ‘love at first sight’, Yoongi,” Seokjin said dreamily, staring out into the sea of people congregating at the bar. Hoseok and Jimin stood at the center, grinning so wide their teeth were like beacons of light, eyes crinkled in happiness. If this had been an anime, there would be hearts floating above their heads, some sweet, high-pitched melody playing over the shouts of congratulations. “Your jealousy is toxic, I shouldn’t even be sitting with you.” “You can’t leave, then I’ll be all alone,” Yoongi pouted. “And I can’t get up, because then I’ll have to talk to people.” “You don’t want to be alone, yet you don’t want to talk to people,” Seokjin repeated, patting his shoulder. “You want to be a ghost.”
“Oh my god!” He threw off the covers and ignored the way the hairs on his arm rose from the cold as he rushed towards the front door. The roaring wind helped blow the door open wide, and Namjoon gazed down at the man hanging weakly to the side of his house, right outside his bedroom window. He was shirtless, and the blinding white of skin almost distracted him from the scaly fish tail that made up his bottom half. Namjoon believed in mermaids, in the same way theologists believed in religion. When evidence was scarce, blind belief was all that was left. But - unless Namjoon was hallucinating - he finally had one over the theologians in terms of proof. “What the fu-” “Help.” The man’s voice was like gravel, so at odds with the soft, wispy blue of his fishtail. “I need help.” Namjoon loved to help people, but in this particular instance - “How?”
“I am getting an assistant,” Seokjin repeated after Yoongi, still not reaching for the papers. “Even though I have never asked for one -” “Are you going to be the first person to complain about getting help?” “ - and this assistant is… is a wolf.” Yoongi looked a bit uneasy now, Seokjin knew his tells. He shuffled in the hallway, and the papers pushed closer to Seokjin as if Yoongi wanted to escape this conversation. “You know that’s not what they’re called,” he scolded. “He grew up in the woods, Yoongi.” “So? A thousand years ago, so did your ancestors.” “A thousand years is a LONG time!” Seokjin squawked, throwing up his hands and ruffling Yoongi’s papers in the process. “Yoongi, does he even know how to use a computer?” “I’m sure he does.” “Oh, you’re sure? Then how about he becomes your assistant and you can deal with teaching a wolf-man to send emails?” Yoongi frowned and looked around at the faces that had appeared from behind office doors, eager to listen in for gossip. “He knows how to send an email,” Yoongi said, ushering Seokjin into his office and shutting the door. “I didn’t specifically interview him, but Namjoon liked him.” “So he can be Namjoon’s assistant.”
“There’s plenty of dating apps,” Taehyung said, holding up both his hands to help count down. “Grindr, Tinder, Hinge, Bumble… there’s Feeld if you’re feeling particularly open-minded and want to explore some kinks, there’s Raya if you think you can bag a celebrity, I actually think you’d be popular on that… there’s the older sites like Match and Plenty of Fish -” “I’m sorry, what is that last one?” “Oh no,” Jungkook groaned, but Seokjin had already perked up. A dating app for fishing? What a modern concept for one of the oldest traditions! “That one is so outdated, hyung -” “That one,” Seokjin said quickly, because an outdated app could only be a benefit to this stupid exercise that would yield no results. “Make me an account, Taehyung.” But when he saw Taehyung’s eager grin, Seokjin backtracked quickly. “Actually, Jimin-ah, you make it.” “I’ll let you help,” Jimin stage-whispered as he took the phone from Taehyung’s hands. “There’s that picture of me holding a tuna,” Seokjin tried to help, and Jungkook groaned again into his hands, coming back up for air with a spot of ketchup on his cheek. Disgusting American food, Seokjin thought as he leaned over to flick it clean. “The fish isn’t, like… a requirement, hyung.” “Honestly, it’s pretty typical,” Taehyung said, and Jimin and Jungkook both glared at him. “What?” “And how do you know that?”

Text reads: Destined to fail, his father had said, and then somehow was disappointed when Ilya did exactly how he predicted. Just because this country was built on ice and brutality doesn’t guarantee a win, Ilya had muttered under his breath. He wasn’t sure if that triggered his father or if it was a combination of things - his constant anger, his inability to show off the son he openly hated, his illness no one could admit was an illness. Either way, Ilya was left with a painful wound on his side from the lash of his father’s cane, and the moon did not wait for anyone. He had spent the night cowering in pain and anger, and when the darkness faded from the sky, Ilya’s wolf was still restless. He panicked for a moment when he couldn’t shift back, the rays of the sun usually enough to shake the animal from his brain, but he remembered what his mother had told him once. ‘Your body and your mind are constantly at odds, but in the middle ground you find the truth.’ Ilya’s wolf was his body, and his mind was human. Somewhere in the middle, the two had to make peace with each other and decide how to best protect him. Ilya’s heart was apparently just along for the ride, he thought glumly as he pushed his injured body off the ground and took off through the forest. So much for enjoying the rest of the games today, he’d really been looking forward to watching the ski finals.
