The fact is that trans people are being targeted more than they ever have, and (because of gross miss-information, targeted attacks and ignorance) public sentiment is moving in the wrong direction. This is sadly true even in certain pockets of our own community – the LGB “movement” is particularly disturbing. No, it’s actually gross. All this is evidenced by the fact that it is no longer politically expedient for many of our allied, “friendly” politicians to even utter the word “trans” in public anymore, let alone champion legislation. Truth: trans folks have been doing the heavy lifting in our community for over half a century. They threw the bricks, marched, took in queer youth that were discarded by their families and parented young people working on the streets, organized, fundraised, cared for us when we were sick and dying and helped us secure every piece of legislation we now take for granted. And, most of it benefitted them not one bit. As a community, it’s my fervent belief that (for the most part) we’ve woefully let them down, and seem on the verge of abandoning them. Lastly, if you’re one of those who subscribe to the belief that as a gay person transphobia doesn’t affect you, you may wish to grab onto your pearls; it’s just the latest version of “themism”, and if themism isn’t called out and irradicated it spreads, as it did in the 1930’s. It’s Transgender Day of Remembrance, and the only thing that will make it a happy one is commitment, action, and solidarity.
