There were unconfirmed reports and speculation online this week that some of the Iraqi forces had been spotted on the streets in Tehran, but there was no comment from Iranian authorities or any verified footage. Such speculation is tied to years-long accusations that Iranian authorities use the PMF and other aligned armed groups to crack down on local dissent, including during nationwide protests, which the authorities have rejected. The Basij paramilitary force of the IRGC and other security forces continue to set up heavily armed checkpoints and roadblocks on the streets in Tehran and other cities, and have launched a “campaign of warriors defending the homeland” that is officially recruiting children over 12 years old for field activities.

"SCL1 – ­Long-term Solar Variability: Observations, Proxies, and Models Conveners: Theodosios CHATZISTERGOS; Sabrina BECHET; Mathew OWENS; Natalie KRIVOVA Description: Understanding long-term solar variability is essential for placing present-day space weather in a broader space climate context and for improving predictions across solar-cycle and longer timescales. While direct measurements of solar irradiance and magnetic fields now span several decades, extending these records further back in time relies on other types of solar observations or indirect proxies, as well as their integration into physics-based models. This session will bring together contributions addressing solar variability over decadal, centennial and millennial timescales. Topics include, but are not limited to, the recovery, preservation, processing, and analysis of historical and pre-historical records and proxies of solar activity. (e.g., historical sunspot records, white-light and chromospheric observations in Ca II K and Hα, as well as cosmogenic isotope records), cross-calibration of these heterogeneous datasets, methods for building consistent long-term records, understanding of grand minima and maxima patterns, as well as advances in reconstruction techniques and uncertainty quantification. This topic is timely given the increasing availability and processing of historical datasets, and advances in data analysis and modelling approaches, which together enable more consistent and physically grounded long-term reconstructions of solar variability. Florence provides a particularly relevant setting for this session, as it is home to the Arcetri Observatory with its extensive archive of Ca II K and Hα observations spanning much of the 20th century."

The included text is: "Overall, our work highlighted issues with the original HS93 TSI series by identifying artefacts in the processing HS93 applied, while also discussing the issues with the arbitrary choice of activity indices used by this model. In addition, by updating the activity indices the model uses, we demonstrated that the original HS93 TSI series suggests an implausible magnitude of variations, which is incompatible with recent TSI data. We also showed that replicating and updating the HS93 model with recent data results in TSI variations since 1700 that are consistent with those by SATIRE-T and NRLTSI, that is those used by IPCC. In particular, the updated HS93 model suggests a TSI difference between the 1700s and 1986 of 0.5 W m−2, which is significantly lower than the 4 W m−2 suggested by the original HS93 series. Finally, we found the updated TSI series with the HS93 model exhibits a rather poor agreement with Earth’s temperature (linear correlation coefficients between 0.13 and 0.23 when considering the entire period of TSI reconstruction, 1700 – 2010). This demonstrates that the high agreement that was previously reported is due to artefacts in the processing applied by HS93 and the exaggerated magnitude of variations they imposed. As a consequence, this also renders void arguments about the solar influence on Earth’s climate that were drawn based on the original HS93 series (e.g. Connolly et al., 2020, 2021; Scafetta, 2023; Soon et al., 2023; Georgieva and Veretenenko, 2023)."

Comparison between our SATIRE-S TSI reconstruction with Mt Wilson magnetograms and the Nimbus-7/ERB data. The top panel shows absolute values, while the lower panels show the differences between the series. For Nimbus-7/ERB we show the data before and after their corrections. This illustrates that the uncorrected data, which are used in the ACRIM TSI composite, have residual uncorrected issues which lead to the artefact of the TSI increase over the ACRIM-gap.
Our updated SATIRE-S TSI series compared to the composite of direct TSI measurements by Montillet et al. 2022. Our reconstruction is shown in red for daily values and blue for 180-day running means. The measurements are shown in black for daily values and yellow for 180-day running means. The lower panel shows the residuals between the two series, also listing the RMS difference being 0.26Wm-2, linear correlation coefficient being 0.87 and trend of residuals bein -0.91 mWm-2y-1 (both series show a decreasing trend over the entire period, but our reconstruction has a smaller declining trend than the Montillet et al. 2022 composite).

Composites of direct total solar irradiance (TSI) measurements. The figure is an update of Fig. 1 from Chatzistergos et al. 2023 The figure includes only composites that receive updates, with the only exception of ACRIM which has not been formally updated since 2013, but it is included here for completeness and for allowing to discuss the issue of the ACRIM-gap.
Our updated SATIRE-S TSI series compared to the composite of direct TSI measurements by Montillet et al. 2022. Our reconstruction is shown in red for daily values and blue for 180-day running means. The measurements are shown in black for daily values and yellow for 180-day running means. The lower panel shows the residuals between the two series, also listing the RMS difference being 0.26Wm-2, linear correlation coefficient being 0.87 and trend of residuals bein -0.91 mWm-2y-1 (both series show a decreasing trend over the entire period, but our reconstruction has a smaller declining trend than the Montillet et al. 2022 composite).
