"AppViews are expensive" is a myth extrapolated from "Running a copy of a Bluesky AppView is expensive", which is true because a Bluesky AppView is a backend server that's supposed to store and serve millions of posts. It would be expensive with any technology! Atproto isn't adding an extra tax here. Running a centralized service at the same scale would be equally expensive, and a Mastodon instance at that scale would simply not run. If your AppView only serves your app's users (and has nothing to do with Bluesky), the cost is cheap or nonexistent. It's just a normal backend that listens to a websocket stream and writes some stuff to a database.

Here is what the nuclear scenario looks like. A year from now, an AI lab assembles a secret A-team, throws a few billion dollars of compute at the Riemann hypothesis, and comes up with a 2,000,000-line Lean proof. What are mathematicians going to say? That the proof is unintelligible? Right, but who cares? Isn’t the whole of math already unintelligible to most people? That the theorem was still proven by the humans in the loop? Yes and no—and in that specific case I would probably vote no.
I am torn by these announcements. On the one hand there is the infinite potential on what we can disover, when AI prompts are solving outstanding problems. On the other, something is lost in an aesthetic sense when it wasnt a man working through this or with a novel insight. If an AI prompt runs on a data center for two weeks and then prints out p=np, it feels a little empty.

The cost of ATProto is only high if your AppView has a goal of "every user should be able to see and access every post and interaction indefinitely". If one limits the scope of what users see on their AppView to, say, a similar scope as what popular ActivityPub applications do (only posts and interactions from users that use that instance, and people that they interact with / follow are available / retained), it becomes not that expensive at all. The difference is that it's easy to scale ATProto AppViews up beyond the reach of their users. It can scale down though. It is not easy to scale ActivityPub instances up beyond the scope of the people who use it, and it would probably be way more expensive if you tried.

Lexicon (lexicons/src/facet.ts:33-38) — the highlight facet has zero properties; no color field exists in the AT Protocol schema at all. 2. Serialization (src/utils/factsToPagesRecord.ts:686-687) — even when the editor has d.attributes.highlight.color, it's dropped: just pushes { $type: "...highlight" }. 3. Renderers — app/lish/[did]/[publication]/[rkey]/Blocks/TextBlockCore.tsx:94 hardcodes bg-highlight-1; emails/post.tsx:1417,1429,1487 does the same. So color never even reaches the wire. The full fix is: 1. Add optional color string property to the highlight facet in lexicons/src/facet.ts 2. Run npm run lexgen to regenerate JSON + types 3. Pass d.attributes.highlight.color through in factsToPagesRecord.ts 4. Use isHighlighted.color to pick the class (bg-highlight-1/2/3, defaulting to 1 for old records) in both TextBlockCore.tsx and emails/post.tsx Want me to do all of that?
