When Democratic leaders respond to these attacks with silence—or worse, by suggesting the party should avoid trans issues to appear more “mainstream”—they’re not just failing to defend a marginalized community. They’re effectively signaling that maybe, just maybe, Republicans are right to target trans people in the way they are. It’s a concession that says, “We won’t oppose these new laws restricting trans rights if that’s what it takes to win.” But winning what? Winning at the cost of human dignity and safety? Not only is this a morally bankrupt path, but it’s also a politically shortsighted one. Backing away from defending rights is a losing move. Joining the GOP in anti-trans crusades won’t just alienate trans people and allies; it will mark Democrats as complicit in bigotry, weakening their stance as a party of progress, inclusion, and equality. By conceding ground on trans rights, Democrats would effectively abandon their core values—and for what? In hopes of peeling off a few voters who, frankly, will never be satisfied? Voters who see no issue with erasing the humanity of an entire group of people? Voters who will choose Republican over Republican-lite seven days a week?
