Circa 1950s it was possible to take an overnight train between Montreal and NYC as this Delaware and Hudson condensed schedule shows. The Laurentian was a day train and the Montreal Limited was an overnight train between the two cities.

1. Too flat.The flatness and lack of depth found on modern buildings prevents surfaces that light and shadows can play on. 2. Too plain. A lack of ornamentation leads to boring buildings. Even everyday buildings should incorporate intricate designs. 3. Too straight. Straight lines at scale create repetitive horizontality, at odds with nature, where nothing has straight lines or right angles. 4. Too shiny. Smooth, flat materials like metal and glass become desensitising when used too densely, providing nothing for our senses to latch on to. 5. Too monotonous. Modern buildings that take the form of rectangles made up of smaller rectangles appear both monotonous at a distance and closer up. 6. Too anonymous. Buildings with no sense of personality or place. A far cry from buildings that used to tell a story and celebrate their surroundings. 7. Too serious. Buildings that are too intimidating, evoking negative emotions.

Known as the Flushing Remonstrance, this document challenged the rigid religious policies enforced by Director-General Peter Stuyvesant. Its signers, comprising settlers of various faiths, lobbied for the freedom to worship according to conscience, arguing that divine law—not state edict—should guide personal belief. The Remonstrance is celebrated as one of the earliest expressions of the idea that individuals have a fundamental right to religious liberty. Its advocates contended that toleration was not merely a civic virtue but a natural right, laying the ideological groundwork for the later development of religious freedom in America. This Revolutionary War era map was based on British intelligence from the observations of Lieutenant Page and the plans of Captain Montressor. It was published in 1778 by the London publisher, William Faden. This, the second issue of the map, extends to the east to encompass Nahant Point, Nantasket Head, Broad Sound, and many islands including the Brewsters and Light House. It also delineates fortifications and troop positions with emphasis on “rebel lines” (American) thrown up in 1775 around Roxbury and Cambridge.
