As Alexander Chamberlain pointed out in 1896 there are many formidable evil spirits who war against or torment the child, among them ‘the Hebrew Lilith, the long-haired night-flier [...] the Roman Caprimulgus, the nightly goatmilker and child killer, and the wood god Silvanus’. Lilith is, of course, the Hebrew for the 'night monster' described in lsaiah xxxiv, 14, as inhabiting the ruins of Edom. Mistranslated as 'screech-owl' (the usual lechuza-zumaya confusion), this Lilith is, in fact, our nightjar, the name deriving from a Sumerian root-word denoting ‘wind' and hence referring to the bird's rapid twisting and turning flight as it pursues the insects it eats.
