Below these photos is this text: Two formerly enslaved Americans who were actors were William Wells Brown (left) and Nancy Green (right). Both were born into slavery near Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Brown escaped to free territory in Ohio in 1834 at the age of 19 and became known as an abolitionist, novelist, playwright, and historian. He often performed dramatic excerpts from his play The Escape. Green became known as “Aunt Jemima,” performing as the character at countless live promotional events.
