Likewise, if the Scottish mountain tops lose their distinctive Arctic-Alpine character, with their specialized avifauna supplanted by widespread species, what does it matter if they are opened up to tourism? British conservationists will have some difficult decisions during the coming decades, as the effects of global warming begin to become apparent.
Farther afield, the conservation of existing wetland areas, particularly those used as stopover sites for migrants in western Europe and Africa, is likely to assume a crucial significance. Judging which ones we should save, and which will inevitably disappear, will not be easy. Ultimately, we may find that we are powerless against the combination of natural and man-made pressures we have set in motion. Like passengers on a rollercoaster, we can only hope that the ride will eventually come to an end, and that when it does, we and the birds will have survived.
