"I often hear the argument that having major characters die is more realistic than having them always come through unscathed. Of course it is. But I personally don't want my fiction to necessarily be "realistic." I want my fiction to be entertaining. For me, that means watching engaging characters I care about get into and out of dangerous predicaments, working and thinking together in order to defeat the bad guys. While some authors (and readers) like the tension of wondering who will live and who will die, I prefer the tension of seeing how the heroes are going to think or work their ways out of each difficult or impossible situation they find themselves in. If I want realism and the deaths of people I care about, I can turn on the news."

Was it like the Imperial Wolf tattooed across her right shoulder and the red and black half-plate she wore? Just a reminder of what she’d lost. Or was it a warning about what happens when you let someone get too close? A tangible reminder that Naira’s blade had pierced her heart the moment it had pierced her mother’s? Maybe it didn’t matter. As a rule, Kenzi didn’t dwell on the past. Life was a river that carried you forward. Every moment, whether good or bad, simply led to the next moment.

It was the second week of March and winter had decided to hang around, dumping almost two feet of snow within spitting distance of the first day of spring. By the time the last bit of snow melted, there would be a disgraced college basketball coach, a terrified pregnant teen, a couple of pissed off cops, and a dead senator. And guess what poor idiot was all tangled up in the middle of that mess. Yup. Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to answer the phone. It was Tuesday, around 10 am, and I had decided to sleep in. As a rule, I’m not the kinda person to sleep late, but Channel 11 was showing Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla on the Late Night Movie and, what can I say, I’m a sucker for guys in rubber suits beating the crap out of each other. I managed to find my way to the little kitchenette between my bedroom and my office. I fumbled with the can of Maxwell House and somehow managed to get the coffee pot going. What is it with sleeping late that makes you feel like more of a zombie than if you hadn’t slept at all? I grabbed the OJ out of the fridge and did a chug-a-lug that would have made a frat boy jealous. As the coffee pot was doing its thing, I went back into my bedroom and threw on a pair of jeans and a hooded sweatshirt.
