just after 6pm there was one car parked in the car space, 6 bikes on the three bike racks, and 12 bikes chained to posts, railings and street signs nearby. None was using the church bike racks, which are out of sight, behind the church tower. (I can’t imagine many would be happy using them after dark; also these are private bike racks and can’t be used in the same way as the public ones on the highway.)

15 years ago as a Bikeability instructor, I spent a day training six 11-year-olds living in Risinghurst on their forthcoming cycling journey to Cheney School. Crossing the Eastern Bypass was pretty intimidating. The most scary part was from the Six Bells pub on Beaumont Road, through Quarry Hollow, which is narrow, bendy and a bit up-and-down. I watched my trainees with great anxiety there. Drivers often gave little ground even when my trainees “took the lane“ as I trained them to. After that, they still had to deal with the challenges of Old Road. At least Warneford Lane has a segregated cycle lane now. All school children in Headington, or indeed anywhere, need safe routes to walk or cycle to school.
