The current licence fee only covers those watching live television or iPlayer, but BBC executives and government figures accept the definition is now outdated. There are signs that the fee will be expanded to include anyone who watches streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime, with the fee potentially added to subscriptions for those services.

On 19 November 2025, Schjelderup was convicted of a child pornography offence after he admitted to forwarding a Snapchat video containing two boys under the age of 18 engaging in sexual activity to four of his friends. He was handed a 14-day suspended sentence. He had previously posted a statement about the incident, which happened when he was 19, calling it a "stupid mistake".[30][31]
