The legend that Dunwich's drowned bells toll on certain tides left no record before the 19th century. The churches are real; the last tower went over the cliff in the 1920s, and a buttress stands in St James's churchyard. 📷 Dennis Jackson/Geograph, CC BY-SA

Thomas Gardner's Historical Account of Dunwich (1754) is silent on bells. Rowland Parker, who wrote the standard modern history of the town, said he had never heard a local mention bells at sea. The fiction is 19th century at the earliest.
