Bard rolls to seduce and gets severely beaten for his efforts
Calviel "Cal" Silverthorne has a very tragic backstory. He was born the youngest son in a large and extended peasant family, with 12 other brothers and sisters. Despite the large size of his family, there was always adequate food, plenty of 'hand-me-down' clothes from older brothers and a large, rambling and cozy farmhouse for shelter. While Cal's family owned land and enjoyed comfortable means, they had little wealth to spare (and share) with their many sons and daughters. Therefore, Cal only has a few coins to begin his adventures with: 15 GP to be exact. No orc raiders, reaver clans or dragons have ever attacked his lands, his home, or his family. Not only are both his parents alive, but all his many brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins are very healthy -- and very much alive, too. His family's lands are productive, yielding bountiful harvests year after year, while their livestock continues to provide ample supplies of milk, eggs and meat with unfailing regularity. A truly tragic backstory, indeed!
The game system we are using to write our fantasy novel for my granddaughter. It needed some modification, of course, but in general it works just fine for that purpose.
BACKGROUND FOR CORVUS LARTHERUM: Born under a blood-red moon in the shadowy recesses of Caladonia, Corvus Lartherum emerged as an omen writ large across the somber skies. His skin bore the deep crimson hue common to Tieflings, while his eyes glimmered like molten gold, betraying an innate spark of arcane potential that hinted at both his Infernal and his draconic heritages. Because of his family background, Corvus’ childhood was steeped in strange rituals, eldritch incantations and the whispered temptations of arcane power. Corvus soon found himself torn between the duality of fear and fascination. Determined to understand his powers—and perhaps escape them—Corvus ventured away from his large and largely-unforgiving family at the age of sixteen. This journey led him on many paths, mainly through many dusty tomes found only in abandoned libraries or carefully locked away in ‘Restricted’ sections of major collections. It was during one of these early forays into a ruined archive that he found ‘The Book.’ Upon perusing this tome, he was surprised when the living Avatar of Cyrullya, daughter of the Great Old One Cthuga (an entity of Flames), appeared to him. She offered him a deal he couldn’t refuse: accept Her pact or be immolated on the spot. Needless to say, Corvus choose wisely. Now he walks the Otherkins’ path, neither wholly part of this world nor wholly part of any other, equally at home in this “reality” and all the other planes of existence.
PACT OF CALLISTA: This would be a fairly-standard pact with a Great Old One save for a few major differences. For one, the ‘Avatar of Cyrullya’ has become an independent, self-sufficient entity of its own over the course of many aeons, even as it continues to serve the original Great Old One Herself. For another, the ‘Avatar’ has become both excessively bored with mindlessly devouring the bodies and souls of mortals (all races) and exceedingly curious as to the mundane/intimate details of mortal life. For these reasons, the ‘Avatar’ has chosen a name – CALLISTA – and a human female form (for now) as a means of exploring mortal relationships and seeing “Reality” through mortal eyes. Even tho she has been seducing mortals for millennia, she is still quite ‘innocent’ and ‘naïve’ when it comes to social interactions, mores and expectations while in mortal form (and yes, she currently appears as a blonde human female whenever she manifests). Despite all that, she has not forgotten her duties to Cyrullya. Her pact stipulates that “she” will siphon off some of Cyrullya’s power to Corvus while NOT devouring him, provided he obtains sacrifices to her in exchange for that power. Note, however, that Callista has been known to take her own sacrifices for herself when the opportunity permits!
