After a failed attempt to colonize an Earth-like planet, Cole returns to Earth aboard the Starship Celestria and awakens from suspended animation in the distant future. Earth's three remaining cities are under autocratic rule. But neither Cole nor Earth's inhabitants are aware of this fact... except for a few. Cole eventually discovers what's going on and as he digs deeper, he comes to realize that things are much worse than he'd imagined. With everything at stake, he's forced to take on a malicious entity - manifested as an AI-human hybrid supercomputer - aware that his every move and all means of communication are being monitored.
