He simply uses his authority to make sure things will work the way his masters prefer. And that polite unthinking obedience makes him very frightening.

A dozen geese and a kelpie guarding the entrance to my quarters. Off camera to the left are 30+ chickens as well.Admittedly, the birds are hanging around because it's close to feeding time, but that won't make facing their gauntlet any less imposing.

Around 35 of our chickens clustering around in front of me, as I'm carrying their feed bucket. Of course they'd get fed sooner if they got out of my way so I could get to their coop faster, but chickens will do as chickens feel best.
