The Soviet era Construction: During the Cold War, the Soviets constructed the airfield as part of their effort to build influence in Afghanistan. Expansion: Following their invasion in 1979, the Soviets expanded Bagram and used it as their primary military hub for their operations in the country. Abandonment: After the Soviet withdrawal in 1989 and during the Afghan civil war in the 1990s, the base fell into disrepair. The US and NATO expansion Reconstruction: After the 9/11 attacks, U.S. and NATO forces took control of the base in late 2001 and began extensive reconstruction. Modernization: Over the next two decades, the base was modernized and became the epicenter of coalition forces' operations in Afghanistan. Major improvements: This included adding a second, longer runway capable of handling larger aircraft, building new hangars, barracks, and support facilities. Withdrawal: The base was secretly evacuated by U.S. forces in July 2021 as part of the overall withdrawal from Afghanistan. The Taliban took control of the airfield in August 2021.
