Putin’s Brexit Masterclass in Democratic Sabotage
Brexit wasn’t just British voters making a choice. It was asymmetrical warfare - Russia amplifying divisions with bots and dark money while useful idiots like Farage and Boris Johnson did the heavy lifting.
The evidence: Arron Banks (major Brexit funder) had undisclosed Russian contacts. Cambridge Analytica deployed psychological warfare tactics. Russian media networks flooded platforms with anti-EU disinformation. UK Parliament found the government “actively avoided” investigating Russian interference.
Steve Bannon saw it clearly - Brexit was his global nationalist project’s first domino. He coordinated directly with Farage, viewing EU dissolution as dismantling the liberal democratic order.
The payoff for Putin: weakened European unity, distracted NATO ally, economic chaos in the West. All achieved with relatively minor investment compared to traditional warfare.
Most responsible: Farage (20-year campaign), Boris Johnson (establishment cover), David Cameron (called the referendum for party politics), Dominic Cummings (data targeting), Arron Banks (dark money), Rupert Murdoch (decades of tabloid poison).
The pattern: same playbook as 2016 US election. Find existing divisions, amplify with targeted disinformation, let domestic bad actors finish the job.
Result: most UK citizens now recognize it as a mistake. The economic damage is measurable. The constitutional crisis continues.
This is what modern authoritarian warfare looks like - no tanks required, just troll farms and gullible politicians.
