Programmer, lover of film and music history. I try to get along with everyone when possible. I'm the lead developer of TES3MP, also currently working on my own game.

In November 2009, Chris made a blog post on the Obsidian forums titled "Alpha Protocol Narrative Process Backslash Ramble" in which he provided a behid-the-scenes look at making Alpha Protocol.

The screenshot included here is of one paragraph in the blog post which explains what the other narrative designers on the game wrote. The text is as follows:

"Much as with the level designers, we broke down the narrative sections into email (95% Matt MacLean) and set Travis Stout loose on the news and at one Hub (Taipei) as well as periphery characters in some of the other locales (Rome). Whenever possible, we set up the narrative team so each designer was married to a specific character (Travis = Stephen Heck, Hong Shi, Omen Deng, for example, and I got most everyone else, plus the dossier and banter for levels). Then once the assignments had been made, that designer would design the interactions for those characters over the course of the game. If I had an Omen question, I'd go to Travis, and if Travis had a question about a handler or SIE, he'd come talk to me. It was also good because it gave Travis a chance to write and contribute to the narrative (which shows in the Heck Taipei phone calls as just one example) and stretch his skills there."

On July 15, 2026, Chris wrote the following:

"Because this keeps getting mentioned and the comparisons aren’t fair in some instances, here’s a list of New Vegas development team and if a Y/N if they still work at Obsidian.

Note that Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, two of the three founders of Fallout are also there (last I heard), so that’s two strong pluses, even if they didn’t work on New Vegas (both worked on Outer Worlds 1 and 2).

So: Of the 73 developers, 16 still work at Obsidian, and in key roles. Tim and Leonard are also big pluses.

Repeat mentions of a name were marked with an "X."

George Ziets is at Digimancy is on Avowed 2, so technically he’s a “no.”

I did not include any administration personnel or Bethesda personnel (notably Additional Writing, which had a lot of Bethesda staff who wanted to add writing to their resumes and we didn’t mind).

If anyone has more up to date information, let me know – there were a few I couldn’t verify. And please double check my math, since well, I’m a writer."

He then included a table with every developer who worked on FNV, noting whether that developer is still at Obsidian or not.

To which Chris replied:

"Sorry to interject but no - like Kreia, there's a lot I think Ulysses gets wrong (but the player gets right). I do like to provide the option for players to trump the antagonist's world view or even convince them they're wrong."

Witness Dauna Bartley, a friend of Chris' accusers, declares under penalty of perjury that she was present for Kelly's supposed incident with Chris and it did not happen. She also declares that Karissa was upset with Chris over his break-up with their other friend and his non-attendance of a convention panel, not because of the reasons she later stated.

In December 2019, Twitter user IcarusBen said the following:

To which Chris replied:

In reply to a tweet quoting Elon Musk as saying Social Security is "the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time", Mr. Zodicus calls Elon the R-word slur.

In December 2025, X user ZarkZuckerberg asked Chris the following on X:

"I demand an opinion on AI for the sake of drama. Make it a crazy one please. I don't care which direction."

To which Chris replied:

"Let me ask A.I.

(I've never used A.I. in my creative work, and I believe it's best as a tool, not a replacement for developers.)

Not all companies agree. I do think it's unfair Larian gets targeted when there's farrrr more egregious examples out there in other companies (who are not strapped for cash) of replacing development staff.

I briefly did contract at a company that had replaced the concept art process entirely. I wasn't there long, and regret even being there for a short time. What was even stranger was the concepts generated were definitely not at quality (at least to me, but I'm not an artist)."

In a forum post from 2008, Chris wrote the following:

"First off, I'm glad you said Scrum and not Agile development.

I don’t blame Eric for not being able to change any of these things – I do think he provided guidance to a lot of new Eternity writers, and we did work to accommodate him after New Vegas.

But before you think I’m being overly magnanimous, Eric absolutely drove away a lot of talented writers (esp. John Gonzalez – Shadow over Mordor, Horizon Zero Dawn), although John likely wouldn’t ever admit to the fact that Eric hated him; also, we were forced to isolate Eric from John’s Lead Writer responsibilities (which was a failure on our part, but I wasn’t in charge of New Vegas, which had a lot of inner development conflicts across the board).

Even more after John left, we actually changed our hiring procedure to cater to Eric on Eternity, since we knew if he didn’t approve of a writer, you might as well set a torch any writer that worked with him.

Overall, I thought John was a great writer.

When I talked to Eric about the perspectives on John (since no one else had), his solution was, “let’s just divide New Vegas tasks so John and I never have to interact with each other,” which was like, that moment where all the sound evaporates from the room and all you see is the other person’s lips moving, but you can’t bring yourself to acknowledge what they’re saying. I mean, the person you're denouncing - he’s your Lead. He’s a good writer. So are you. Try to meet in the middle. But – no, that was not to be.

Despite the situation, John turned in his notice (which also broke me a little more) and went on to bigger and better things – Mordor, Horizon: Zero Dawn. Kudos to him, but a huge loss for Obsidian in writing talent (much like George Ziets and Travis Stout). All could have been prevented, imo."

In an exchange on X from January 15, 2026, Mr. Zodicus says the following:

To which Chris replies:

"They'll be picking pieces of Reddit outrage off the landscape for weeks"

Then Chris adds:

"That is, if there's anything from Reddit left after they tried their whole "Fallout is anti-capitalist" bullshit, which, of course, turned out to be 1000% false"

He also includes a screenshot of Tim Cain saying the following in a comment on his YouTube channel:

“Critique of capitalism was never the point of Fallout. In fact, the game went out of its way to mention that other countries like China were also behaving terribly. If anything, Fallout is a comment that war is inevitable given basic human nature.”

In a December 2024 exchange, Chris says he voted for Harris and mentions he spoke up about Matt Hansen because of previous nepotism at Obsidian.

The screenshot contains a snippet of an interview that The Escapist did with Robert Kurvitz in 2019. The text reads as follows:

The members of the small Estonian studio are all high school dropouts who had no prior game development experience before working on Disco Elysium. Kurvitz, who is 35, said they spent most of their youth smoking cigarettes, wandering the gray Eastern European architecture, and playing Dungeons & Dragons. They started with a bootleg Finnish copy of the tabletop role-playing game but quickly were inspired to start coming up with their own rules and setting. Disco Elysium has drawn numerous comparisons to the Dungeons & Dragons-based CRPG Planescape: Torment, and Kurvitz said that’s no accident.

“The two biggest favors anyone’s ever done me in my life are the political education from Estonian punk bands and what (lead designer and writer) Chris Avellone did with Planescape: Torment. Punk bands got me through my life until I was 27 or 28, and Chris Avellone’s contributions to video games got me past 29. I don’t think I would have had the imagination to think you could be so ambitious and literary in video games.”

The Design part of the Fallout 2 credits which lists Feargus Urquhart and Matthew J. Norton as co-lead designers of Fallout 2.

Chris says he voted for Harris and was taking a stance against Obsidian's hiring practices because of his own unrelated experience with them in the past.

Witness Dauna Bartley testifies under penalty of perjury that nothing happened between Chris and Kelly Bristol when they were introduced, contradicting Kelly's story, and also notes that Karissa was upset with Chris because of his break-up with her friend and his non-attendance at a convention event, not any other impropriety from him.

In a conversation with a friend on September 14, 2012, Karissa wonders why Chris didn't take an interest in other women at DragonCon 2012, saying:

"Dunno if turd. Bachelor, for sure. Way more fun for him to be w/o ties. But then why JUST me for literal ENTIRETY of D*C?? I dunno."

In reply to an early investigation into Karissa Barrows' accusations against Chris, Karissa wrote the following on Twitter on July 6, 2020:

"Wow, it’s like I didn’t say myself that my roommate was asleep the whole time in a soundproof hotel room, or that he had been a perfect gentleman the rest of the weekend & I didn’t process what happened until later, or that I never said r*pe - I said assault 🙄🙄 inc*ls are dumb"

In a series of tweets from July 2024, Chris wrote the following:

"Yeah, John and I eventually worked in the same studio but not on the same project at Guerrilla shortly before my cancellation (I lost my job there too).

It was good to catch up (he made time even though he was super busy), but I felt bad because it didn’t seem like the fact the story success of Horizon ended up giving him any cred or say over future stories.

He ended up departing while I was working there, which sucked. Still, while gone from Guerilla now, he’s still writing, and I’m thankful he made New Vegas’ story the great story it was. Kudos to the Gonzalez."

Dauna Bartley declares that she was present when Kelly Bristol alleged to have been groped and that nothing of the sort happened. She also declares that Karissa Barrows was afterwards trying to blacklist Chris from DragonCon because of his split with his girlfriend, not because of any of the reasons she later claimed.

Witness Dauna Bartley declares that she was present for the interactions between Chris and Kelly Bristol on the evening that Kelly alleged she was assaulted by Chris and that nothing actually happened. She also adds that Karissa tried to blacklist Chris from DragonCon because of his break-up with her friend, not because of any misbehavior towards women as Karissa later alleged.

Page 2 of Chris Avellone's 2022 complaint against Karissa Barrows filed in federal court in Illinois. It contains the following paragraph, which I have highlighted by placing it inside a red rectangle:

"This Court has subject matter jurisdiction over this action pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1332(a) because the matter in controversy exceeds the sum or value of $75,000, exclusive of interest and costs, and is between citizens of different States."

I’m tired of being paralyzed by my own brain, sucked into situations that only drain me further.

I got out of Florida, but now the real work begins to heal and move forward."

She then added:

"Still debating whether or not therapy is really for me. Definitely working on getting back on meds, though."

On June 22, 2020, Kelly Bristol wrote the following on Twitter:

"It’s still pretty stunning that I’ve been targeted so many times, despite being on the very outer fringes of the industry. (I’ve always been indie, and I was older than average to begin with.)

That says more about the pervasiveness of this problem than anything else, I think."

On June 18, 2020, Kelly posted the following on Twitter:

"Beyond that, I’ve been spending this time mentally preparing to spend the rest of my life single.

It is what it is. I’m 41 and can’t have kids, so that’s 2 strikes. I’m also not conventionally attractive. 3 strikes.

I‘m also *picky*, which doesn’t help. Fuck, that’s 4 strikes."

To which Karissa replied:

"Listen girlfran, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong w/ spending your life single. That’s been me for... 8? years now & I’m happier free than I *ever* was taken (& not all my relationships were shitty). Now you can do WHATEVER you want, WHENEVER you want! Live your BEST life.💜"

After further elaboration from Karissa, Kelly replied the following:

"Thank you so much, lovely. I needed to hear all of that. Love youuu 💜"

To which Karissa replied:

"Love you 💜💜💜"

On June 22, 2020, the_mermae wrote the following on Twitter:

"In 2018 I was leaving BioWare & looking for work Escoblades contacted me & pulled some sketchy shit. I recognized it as grooming and I broke contact, withdrew from panels to avoid him & when I reported his behaviour no actions were taken because "nothing happened."

Believe them."

To which Kelly Bristol replied:

"I also experienced (attempted) grooming from him.

I’m sorry, and I havw your back."

On October 15, 2020, Chris wrote to Scott about the allegations. Copy-pasting the contents of his email would make this alt text exceed the limit of 2000 characters. However, it is Scott's reply that matters, and it went as follows:

"Hey, Chris. It's been a year, that's for sure.

I had to take some time to meditate on your email. [Long redacted explanation], so I don't want my name in the media or put forward anywhere, please. I hate to be cold and neutral out of the gate but do need to lead with that.

Frankly, I did not witness any predatory behavior by you when we were socializing at DragonCon. I've seen David's exoneration video and was surprised to see my name appear as an ancillary account. Regarding the events I was mentioned in, I do not recall any interactions by you that were inappropriate.

Generally, when we were socializing at the Con, there was alcohol, bawdy chat and humor but otherwise, I can't say I witnessed any egregious behavior. However, I can't speak for behind closed doors and things I wasn't personally there for.

The relationship with [redacted] is complicated, another matter and is surely the animus source of others.

Again, I'd like to stay uninvolved. If you'd like to talk further, I believe you still have my number and I'm willing to chat, or on Hangouts, Zoom, or whatever. Hang in there, I know things are difficult and can't pretend to imagine what you've been going through. I don't keep in contact with the DragonCon crew much and certainly won't discuss your personal life.

In a private conversation with Chris in 2021, one of the witnesses from DragonCon 2012 says the following:

"I had no clue about those DMs, but I'll tell you right now that lines up with how she talked about you to me.

Do you remember the friends that she mentioned in her accusation that checked on her afterwards?

They were [redacted] and me. We knew you were both drunk, we knew y'all had left together. We knew y'all were hot for each other, and we didn't know *you* as well (or, really, at all beyond John being a Fallout fan). She assured us things were copacetic and that you'd listened when she stopped and that she was *happy*.

All. That. Next. Year. whenever we would talk, you inevitably came up. She referred to you constantly and consistently as "conboyfriend" and talked to me as if you two were seeing each other. I didn't know you *hadn't* seen each other for that whole year until your Medium article.

So no, I didn't know about these DMs, but they're consistent with how she was immediately afterwards."

In Kelly's "Opposition Motion to Dismiss Counterclaims" from October 28, 2022, her declaration continues as follows:

"f*ck my friends’ boyfriends.” That is when he put his hand on my butt and further whispered “She doesn’t have to know.”

5. I was thoroughly disgusted, though I was so taken aback by his actions that I froze. The bar area was extremely crowded, so there wasn’t really anywhere for me to go, so I was stuck standing right next to Mr. Avellone. Looking for a way out, I noticed that a friend, named Scott, was looking in our general direction with a scowl on his face. I returned Scott’s gaze with a “help” expression on my face and soon after, Scott got Mr. Avellone’s attention and distracted him away from me. I believe that Scott’s scowl was directed at Mr. Avellone, though with the bar area so crowded, he could have been looking past Mr. Avellone.

6. Although DragonCon was a professional event for people in the gaming industry, Mr. Avellone was heavily intoxicated every time I saw him. At one point, I witnessed Mr. Avellone loudly screaming at Ms. Izawa, in public, after she had expressed concern for his well-being, which I found terrifying. I also observed Mr. Avellone causing a big scene after he became so drunk that he bolted out of the hotel and started running through the streets surrounding the hotel. He seemed to be completely unaware of where he was, what he was doing, and the danger he was putting himself in, causing several people to chase after and go looking for him.

7. I understand that Mr. Avellone denies having ever met me. To show he actually met me, I’m attaching Exhibit 1, a true and correct copy of a photo I took showing me with Mr. Avellone and Ms. Izawa at Pulse."

Kelly declared the following in her "Opposition Motion to Dismiss Counterclaims" from October 28, 2022:

"I, Kelly Rae Bristol, declare as follows:

1. I am the defendant/counterclaim-plaintiff in this action. I am over 18 years old. This declaration is based on my personal knowledge and I could and would testify to the following facts if called to testify in this case.

2. I attended DragonCon in Georgia in 2014. It was there that I met Mr.
Avellone. I had just arrived in Atlanta and went to Pulse, the bar at the Marriott Hotel, to meet up with people I knew who were attending the convention. An acquaintance of mine, Karissa Barrows, was there, and I began socializing with her and the group of people she was with. It was through those interactions that I was introduced to Mr.
Avellone.

3. Pulse had a large, open area for hotel guests to congregate, and it was packed with hundreds of people. I eventually found Ms. Barrows and another woman, named Jackie Izawa, who I understood to be Mr. Avellone’s then-girlfriend. They introduced me to Mr. Avellone, since I had not met him before. I shook Mr. Avellone’s hand and said it was nice to meet him. He was slurring his words and appeared to be
heavily intoxicated.

4. A moment or two later, Ms. Izawa turned to speak to someone else. While she was turned away, Mr. Avellone pressed his body against mine and whispered in my ear asking if I would like a drink, which I declined. Mr. Avellone then pressed his body against mine again and asked if I would like to go back to his room. I responded “I don’t"

On August 14, 2013, Karissa said the following about her first night at DragonCon 2012:

"I, uh... may or may not have had too many the first night of DCon last year. It's a great story."

On June 22, 2020, Kelly wrote the following on Twitter:

"“You’re so brave for speaking out!”

Thanks. I’ve spent all weekend checking & rechecking privacy & security settings everywhere, putting my family on alert, as well as reinforcing muted accounts, words, & blocklists. All while having panic attacks & barely eating or sleeping.

To say nothing of having to witness account upon account of abuse and/or assault from countless other women across this industry, some harmed by the same men I was.

How many fucking times to we have to fucking do this baring of our traumas? Why must the abused constantly relive what was likely one of the worst moments (if not THE worst) of their lives because you “just need to hear the facts to be sure”?"

The Kotaku article about the accusations includes the following paragraphs:

“I was just kind of hanging my head there because I was feeling more self-conscious than anything,” Karissa said. “The biggest moment of clarity during this whole thing which came back to me later—again, things have come back to me in pieces—the thing I remember most clearly is when he started to undo my pants and put his hand down into them, I told him, ‘This is not a good idea.’ I think he paused for a moment, because I don’t think he was expecting me to say that, and I think the only reason I was able to say that was because I was on my period at the time.”

“He’s fucking disgusting, but he did not rape me,” she said. “He assaulted me, 100 percent, but I stopped him.”

In 2017, Kelly said the following on Twitter:

"It’s hard being home because I put nearly all my energy into “acting right” so as to not get yelled at by family for being lazy or whatever excuse they use instead of coming to terms wirh my very real, very debilitating bipolar disorder."

In a conversation with a friend on September 14, 2012, Karissa wonders why Chris didn't take an interest in other women at DragonCon 2012, saying:

"Oh man. When I met him the year & at the convention I was at with you, he skeeveved me a little but I thought it was just because I was such an outsider & not a partier.

I hope like crazy I didn’t miss him preying on you. Or that I might’ve been able to stop it."

To which Karissa notably replied:

"Not even the two men who helped him get me to my room realized it and they saw it with their own eyes. You have nothing to worry about."

On September 25, 2012, Audrey Oeillet wrote the following to Karissa on Twitter:

"@SJBsMama Actually I come with a friend, we want to book the Hyatt, reservations start October 2... we brace ourselves!"

To which Karissa replied:

"@Najaraka Try for International Tower! Elevator access is easier! :)"

To which Audrey replied:

"@SJBsMama International Tower is an hotel ?"

To which Karissa notably replied:

"@Najaraka No no, it's an area in the Hyatt. There's the main rooms, then Radius Tower (where I stayed this year) and International Tower."

In a conversation from October 30, 2012 between Karissa and her then friend Jeff Johnson, Jeff says the following:

"Heh. True. Just keep the conversation going."

To which Karissa replies:

"And the alcohol flowing. :D I do what I can."

In a conversation from October 30, 2012 between Karissa and her then friend Jeff Johnson, Jeff says the following:

"So your Con-boyfriend was in the Guild huh? Damn. . . that's freakin' awesome!"

To which Karissa replies:

"He's going to be in this season! I'm a little stoked about it. Con-boyfriend beying 41? Who cares. :D"

To which Jeff replies:

"He's not that old. Is he ac ool guy? Why not pursue something with him? ;)"

To which Karissa replies:

"Oh he's awesome. So fun and a complete gentleman. I dunno, it'd be cool, but I'm not sure that's what he wants."

To which Jeff replies:

In a conversation with a friend on September 14, 2012, Karissa wonders why Chris didn't take an interest in other women at DragonCon 2012, saying:

"Dunno if turd. Bachelor, for sure. Way more fun for him to be w/o ties. But then why JUST me for literal ENTIRETY of D*C?? I dunno."

In a private conversation from October 30, 2012 between Karissa Barrows and Jeff Johnson, Jeff said the following to Karissa:

"Heh. True. Just keep the conversation going."

To which Karissa replied:

On June 29, 2021, Michigan-based attorney Richard Hoeg wrote the following on Twitter commenting on Chris' California lawsuit:

"FWIW, the John Doe stuff is by far the least fleshed out part of the entire filing, and I don't really blame folks for missing it. That said, he does introduce the concept, and really doesn't back it up. Strategically, its inclusion seems a mistake."

To which a California-based attorney replied the following:

"FYI, the wording on the Doe stuff is very much in the standard boilerplate wording for a CA state court complaint, it's just the local practice (source: am CA lawyer)"

To which Richard replied:

"Certainly local mores would make sense. It certainly doesn't read terribly well to the outside observer."

To which the California-based attorney replied:

"ostensibly, it's to make it easier to add defendants later if you don't know their identities at the time of filing; some counties even have local forms to further streamline it"

In Kelly's "Opposition Motion to Dismiss Counterclaims" from October 28, 2022, she declares the incident with Chris happened on her first evening at DragonCon 2014.

In response to reports of people being assaulted and groped at DragonCon 2014, Kelly replies the following:

"that stuff hasn't happened to me. As I told J, I'm fat & that's kryptonite to the frat boy element that's here."

On the 20th of June 2020, Kelly made the following accusation on Twitter in a reply to Karissa:

"I’ve never admitted this on main, but he groped me repeatedly at D*C 2014, by Pulse. Every time you or his gf weren’t looking, his hand was on my ass & he was trying to get me to go to his room. I told him I don’t fuck my friends’ boyfriends & to stay the fuck away from me...

I swear he ONLY stopped when Scott gave him the dirtiest look I’ve ever seen. He was ready to turn Avellone into paste.

And I somehow came away from that feeling like I’d done something to bring it on.

I shook his hand when we were introduced. That’s it. That’s all it took."

To which Karissa replied:

"OH MY FUCKING GOD. Also thank goodness for Scotty. Remember when he and I ran off to go find that fucker after [redacted] came back to the room after not being able to find him downtown?? Holy fucking SHIT I can’t believe I didn’t know this"

Witness Dauna Bartley, who was present when Kelly Bristol was allegedly groped by Chris, declares that nothing of the sort happened, and that Scott never wanted to beat Chris up as Kelly also alleged.

She moreover adds that Karissa was upset with Chris because of his break-up with her friend.

In an interview for The Guardian in 2007, interviewer Alexander Gambotto-Burke says the following to Chris:

I knew with Torment that I wanted major female adversaries, and I wanted the females in your party to be a lot more real than that fucking idiotic, "Oh, you're such a hero!" stereotype. There's just so much more room for interesting female characters."

Witness Dauna Bartley fully denies Kelly Bristol's accusations against Chris and also says Karissa Barrows was upset with Chris in 2015 because of his break-up with her friend and made no mention of the accusations she would later make about a supposed incident from 2012.
