Unlike management at this site or Twitter, the people in charge are not overtly hostile to journalists and journalism. The problem is that the super users are. jbouie yeah, no journalist is going to spend time at a place where a) moderation tools are underdeveloped and b) cliques of users can generate thick storms of harassment

Aylo Holdings, the parent company of the website, reached a deferred prosecution agreement to resolve accusations of engaging in illicit financial transactions linked to sex trafficking profits, announced Breon Peace, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. As part of the agreement, the Montreal-based company is obligated to pay over $1.8 million to the U.S. government and make separate payments to individual women affected by the trafficking. Additionally, it requires the appointment of an independent monitor for three years, following which the charges will be dismissed

Traditional social networks are often closed platforms with a central authority. There’s a small group of people who control those companies, and they have total control over how users can use the platform and what developers can build. On these platforms, as a user, if you try to leave, you have to start over from scratch without the connections you built there or the content you made. As a developer, if you try to build a new app, you have to overcome network effects to rebuild the social graph from scratch, and if you try to build on the APIs of these companies they can cut you off and kill your company in the blink of an eye. As a creator, you might spend years building an audience only to lose access to it when the platform changes the rules on you. The AT Protocol changes this.
