🌱 Video shows bare stems of Cotinus coggygria (Smoke bush / tree) that were pruned hard several weeks ago while it was still cold. There were no visible buds on the stems when I pruned it back but in the video you can see buds swelling and breaking through the bark, though they have not opened yet.

This is helpful. The period between brutal cold and snow and hot summer weather goes by quickly. It's hard to tell the difference between dead branches and trees and slow starters.

Mine have all the 12ft high branches from last year and the new short ones. I was thought the big ones were dead and was going to cut them off tomorrow, but maybe I should look more closely? Thanks for sharing!
