It's almost as if it's alarming to observe a politician that has core beliefs anymore vs those that simply ride the waves of public sentiment. Obviously the country's voters have a very strong preference for the latter, it's borne out in our choices for president & congress.

Ensuring a "system of fairness" is possible first requires stopping an authoritarian takeover. Like it or not your duties extend beyond your own personal hesitations. We're not going to let you purity test us into fascism anymore.
Democrats in congress are still crossing aisle to approve judges and nominations. This is in that same vein. They aren't prepared for this moment.
