Bergander’s painting is called ”Dirne mit Strohhalm” which translates as “Whore with a Straw”. Both paintings portray the woman as being very thin, and there’s something odd about her fingers. If you look closely, you’ll see that her fingernails in both the portraits are clubbed (curved and broad, tending to cover the whole of the top of the finger tip). Clubbed nails tend to be a sign of low oxygen, a very common cause of which was (and still is) pulmonary tuberculosis. TB was rife in depression era Germany, where poor and cramped living conditions and inadequate nutrition meant that infection rates were high.
