Gaston County Schools loses $6.8 million a year to state-mandated charter pass-through. The buildings still age. The buses still run. The staff still has to stretch. But the money? Gone. New post on what this actually costs — and who it actually serves.
NC's voucher program was sold as a lifeline for low-income families. After the 2023 expansion stripped income limits, the demographic breakdown shifted from 57% White / 23% Black to 73% White / 11% Black. Gaston County's public schools are paying the price. [link]
Gaston County home values jumped dramatically on paper. The state saw that and cut $7.2 million from school funding. Nobody's paycheck went up 1.85x. I was VERY late to the game with Amy Winehouse. My first time truly hearing anything from her was when I bought a small vinyl collection off Facebook marketplace back around 2020.
